Part 1: Flexible Packaging

There’s been a lot of positive conversation surrounding Asahi’s CleanPrint plate technology, but are they really that good? What exactly can printers expect to gain? How does it help to solve the issues they face every day? In this three part series we’re breaking down the benefits for a variety of end-use applications—flexible packaging, labels and folding cartons.

Part 1: Flexible Packaging

Simply put, flexible packaging inks have to be tough. Lamination structures go through several steps in the converting process that aren’t very forgiving to a delicate ink film. Chemically speaking, inks formulated for pouch applications require a high bond strength. That’s why Wikoff Color’s top solvent-based inks are formulated with technically advanced binder systems to provide excellent adhesion and bonding properties. As you might expect, that can translate to some sticky situations on press, specifically related to ink transfer from plate to substrate. So how can we maintain the integrity of the ink while eliminating challenges on press?

Enter, Asahi’s CleanPrint plates. The masterminds at Asahi have figured out a way to lower the surface tension of the plate surface such that the polyurethane binding systems in the ink happily release to the more accepting substrate.

Gone are the days of inks drying on plate surfaces, dirty print and loss of overall equipment efficiency as a result. Instead, say hello to smooth vignettes and clean lines. Assuming you add Asahi photopolymer plates to your arsenal, that is.
