Wikoff Color joined industry professionals at the TLMI PrintTHINK Summit in Chicago to participate in the panel discussion surrounding “Everything LED.” Dr. Evan Benbow, Director of R&D for Wikoff Color, represented the company by giving a brief presentation on LED-cure technology and how it relates to migration and food safety requirements. Benbow, who also serves as a board member of NPIRI food safety committee, sits on the EuPIA printing inks for food contact materials committee, and actively promotes the use of energy-cure technologies through RadTech membership, is an expert on the matter. During his presentation he reminded printers to keep some important details in mind when considering the utilization of LED in food safe packaging, including the definition of a functional barrier, TCSA challenges and the wide spectrum of lamp quality. Benbow maintains that migration requirements are the most important consideration when deciding if LED is the correct choice for the application, but also wants customers to know that there are plenty of options available if LED poses challenges, from nitrogen inerting to EB-cure techniques.

The main takeaway from the summit is that the low migration conversation is still evolving and printers continue to seek the best energy-cure option to suit their needs. As a customer-oriented ink and coating supplier, Wikoff Color is happy to advise label printers on the pros and cons of each technology on the market. The right energy-cure technology is based on several factors, including migration and food safety requirements, press type and customer expectations.

With the TLMI Annual Meeting just one month away, similar discussions regarding energy-cure technology and migration concerns are expected to unfold. Wikoff Color will be in attendance to discuss any lingering questions regarding the best
solutions for specific end-use needs.
